What is Type Approval:
It is an established standard/process set up by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to assess and certify that communications equipment, including mobile phones meet set standards before they can be brought into and used within Nigeria. This ensures that only certified, high-quality, and network-compatible devices are made available to Nigerian Telecoms Consumers.
Why Type Approval is Important:
- Consumer Protection/ Environmental Safety
Many fake phones use non-certified materials that may pose environmental hazards. Type-approved phones usually meet environmental standards. They also help protect Telecom Consumers from substandard, and counterfeit handsets that may cause health /safety risks.
- Network Compatibility
Approved phones are tested to ensure they work seamlessly with the networks of Mobile Network Operators, reducing issues like dropped calls, poor network, and poor internet access.
- Radio Frequency
All Devices must comply with approved radio frequency to avoid interference with other communications equipment.
- Disruption to Toll free Service
Non-Type Approved phones may disrupt access to toll-free numbers like 622, 112 in Nigeria. These phones might not be fully compatible with the networks, which can lead to dropped calls, poor call quality, or even an inability to connect to the toll-free number.
